  1. Ukrainian comedian Volodymyr Zelensky – new President

What’s in news?

  • In Sunday’s vote, Volodymyr Zelensky handily beat Ukraine’s incumbent president, Petro Poroshenko, taking 73 percent of the vote with the count almost complete on Monday evening.

Youngest president

  • Zelensky — who at 41 is to be Ukraine’s youngest-ever President, the star of “Servant of the People”, a sitcom now in its third season, has vowed to pursue the pro-European course set out by his predecessor and wants to improve ties with arch-enemy Russia.
  • Zelenskiy has also pledged about the possible plans for the country of 42 million people to one day join the European Union and NATO.
  • From Ukraine’s presidential elections, the country is set to become the only one in the world besides Israel whose president (Volodymyr Zelensky) and prime minister (Volodymyr Groysman) are both Jewish.

 

  1. World Press Freedom Index 2019

What’s in news?

  • The Reporters Without Borders (RSF) (since 2002) released the World Press Freedom Index 2019.
  • The index is topped by Norway turns to be an hatrick, followed by Finland and Sweden at second and third positions, respectively.
  • India’s rank dropped two places on a Global Press Freedom Index to be ranked 140th out of 180 countries.

The key facts

  • India has never gone below 105th rank in the past 15 years. Higher ranks and scores denote lower freedom of the press. India’s rank has consistently dropped in the past three years.
  • According to the index, India is violence against journalists including police violence, attacks by Maoist fighters, criminal groups and corrupt politicians.
  • India’s abusive score, a measure of the intensity of abuse and violence against journalists and the media, is much higher than the average.
  • India’s overall score puts it in the very serious category in terms of lack of press freedom.
  • In the west, the U.S. moved from the ‘satisfactory’ to ‘problematic’ category.

 

  1. Gomathi surprises to win 800m gold

What’s in news?

  • India’s first gold at the 23rd Asian athletics championships at Doha’s Khalifa International Stadium on Monday evening by Gomathi Marimuthu
  • A 30-year-old Tamil Nadu athlete, who ran the race of her life as she fought her way from the back and shocked the field to take the women’s 800m honour with a personal best of 2:02.70s.

  • The Asian Athletics Championships is an event organized by the Asian Athletics Association from 1973.
  • India has bagged 85 gold medals and still counting , has also topped in Asian athletic championship 2017 medal table.
  • Gomathi Marimuthu ‘s previous best (2:03.21s) came with the Federation Cup gold recently in Patiala.
